Barcelona Bound

We are now staying at the Residences at Torre Girona – a simple but nice, dormitory-like place with two single beds in a room that also has a tiny kitchenette and bathroom. But it has two prime things that Margo likes – a mini-frig and a microwave. We had our typical Spanish breakfast downstairs (bread, ham, cheese, fruit, juice, coffee), but they also had milk and cereal. Then we took off and walked to the Tour Bus stop to catch the double-decker tourist buses that goes all over Barcelona. You can hop-on and hop-off as many times as you like. We bought a 2-day pass.

We did the “blue” route today, and got to see many famous landmarks. We went up to the top of Montjuic Hill where we had some magnificent views of Barcelona, saw several Antoni Gaudi-designed buildings, and then we got off at La Rambla.

Spent two hours on the bus and three walking up and down La Rambla, where we saw a mass of humanity. Also, there were a lot of “living statues” and other entertaining performers there. We have been in awe of the width of the streets here. On one street there were 10 lanes for cars, two separate bicycle lanes, 2 pedestrian lanes and three grassy medians, and wide sidewalks in front of the buildings. Finally, near the end of the day, we stopped for tapas.

We went to the Mercat Boqueria – a huge and famous farmer’s market.
