Fish and Emissions

David met Lucio Alonso Alonso the next morning and they walked to the School of Engineering of the University of the Basque Country where David made his Wed morning presentation on Modeling Emissions of Methane Gas from Landfills.

Margo tracked down a double-decker hop-on, hop-off tour bus, which she took all around Bilbao. She hopped off in the Casco Viejo area (the historic district) where she took in a huge fresh fish market, with dozens of vendors and hundreds of varieties of fish, squid, octopus, barnacles, shrimp, escargot, (and things that she didn’t even recognize). She took in the fine arts museum and saw the Murillo exhibit (he was a fantastic Spanish classical painter from the mid-1600’s). Margo found a fruteria and bought some delicious tangerines, and got back to the hotel about 4:00.

After David’s presentation, he had coffee with Lucio and another professor in the student union, and then toured their laboratories. They were impressively large, clean, well organized, and well-equipped. He wishes that UCF had such good labs! He then walked back to the hotel and only got lost once coming back 6 blocks!)

After siesta time, Lucio picked up David again at the hotel and they walked to a meeting room of the Professional Engineers Association, where David gave his second presentation on Modeling Traffic Emissions in Urban Areas. After the presentation, they were joined by a colleague of Lucio’s and had some beer and tapas on the way back to the hotel.
